Cornfield's contemporary dance class is designed to develop greater strength and resilience, and to prepare dancers for a contemporary dance vernacular. The warm-up travels from standing to the floor and back, and progresses to movement phrases that test weight and direction change, and culminates in full throttle, lush dance phrases. In addition to focusing on alignment, musicality, rhythm, dynamics, and spatial awareness, the class will acknowledge the affects our emotions have on our physicality, and will seek to unfold this awareness into the dancing.
Cornfield's reach as an artist/teacher has extended throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan. She has conducted residencies at some of the most important dance institutions in the US, including North Carolina School of the Arts, the State University of New York at Purchase, Ohio State University, and her alma mater, UC Berkeley. She is a master teacher, with a clarity of technical knowledge honed in her eight seasons as a dancer with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (1974-1982), and a spontaneous, generous teaching style that enables her to work effectively with any level of dancer.
"A marvelous dancer/choreographer...a teacher with long experience"
-Joan Finkelstein, Former Director 92nd St. Y Harkness Dance
